Joseph Waite of Hampshire

Joseph Waite was the father of the following children.  He may have been the second son of the same name born to Francis and Grace Waite.  This second son was christened on 17 Sep 1718 in the High Street Independent Church in Gosport, Hampshire[1]. 

This Joseph Waite was born about the right time and in the same shire where the children were born.  He was also christened in an Independent church.  Members of such churches believed that local congregational control of religious and church matters should remain in the local church’s hands.  With all of the children of a Joseph Waite also being christened in an independent church, this may tie Francis’ second son to these children. 

Arguing against Francis Waite’s second Joseph being the father of the following children is the fact that Francis’ son was not christened very close to where the children were.  All of these children were christened at the East Street Independent Church in Andover which is about 15 miles north of Gosport.

This list of children includes forenames of all of the minor immigrants who landed in Charleston, SC in 1768.  And this list may explain why Sarah was initially considered eligible for a land grant by the Carolina authorities.
