Richard Waite of Yorkshire

Some believe that Richard Waite is the grandfather of Samuel Wai(gh)t(e)s who was born circa 1753 and died in Georgia in 1836.  The following are the recorded details about Richard's family.  Given that Yorkshire is on England’s east coast, while Bristol is on the west coast,  Earlier posts on this blog document Samuel’s sailing from Bristol.  It seems doubtful that one of Richard’s children would go to a more distant port to sail to the New World.

Richard Waite married Jane Freer on 15 Nov 1689 in Hovingham in Yorkshire, England.[1]

Their children, who were all christened in Hovingham, were:

Richard Waite, chr. May 1691[2]

William Waite, chr. 07 Apr 1700[3]

Mary Waite, chr. 17 Apr 1701[4]

George Waite, chr. 08 Oct 1702[5]

James Waite, chr. 09 Jan 1703[6]

Robert Waite, chr. 09 Dec 1705[7]

John Waite, chr. 16 Oct 1707[8]

It is this last child some believed to be the same who arrived in Charleston, SC in 1768 with Mary, John Jr., Samuel, Benjamin and Sarah.

I do not believe this John was Samuel's father.  This is because there is no known record of Samuel having sons named George, Robert or Richard.  Further research is needed to document John’s residence in Yorkshire during the first half of the 1700’s. to verify that he immigrated.
